Opening Scripture

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever! Amen. Ephesians 3:16-21

Opening Prayer

Almighty God, You are holy and worthy of praise. You are my Father, and I walk humbly in Your love. You are my Shepherd, who guides and protects me. I make myself available to You to accomplish Your will in me. I surrender every attitude, thought, and action to You. You are my Provider, and I trust You to meet my needs. Forgive me when I disappoint You and fall short. Help me to forgive others, that I might reflect Your forgiveness. Show me my sin, so I can confess it to You. Don’t let my feet stray from the path of righteousness. Protect me from Satan’s temptations, lies, and deceptions. Strengthen my faith and trust in You alone. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

Reflection  

The name Jabez appears twice in Scripture, both occurrences in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles. The first instance refers to a town associated with families of scribes. The second time, it refers to a noteworthy individual from the tribe of Judah.

The name Jabez literally means “pain” or “sorrow,” yet he became a respectable man – “more honorable than his brothers” – by turning completely to God. The Chronicler considered Jabez to be of enough importance that he paused his methodic documentation of Jewish lineage to highlight Jabez and his prayer.

The fact that a brief biographic summation embedded in a routine genealogy can serve as a testimony of faithfulness and capture people’s attention is a source of great encouragement. These few words offer disproportionate insight into this man’s relationship with God.

Jabez refused to be defined by the painful circumstances of birth and subsequent name. He chose to be more righteous and respectable than those around him. He trusted God and prayed an audacious prayer. God’s gracious response indicates that Jabez’ request was consistent with God’s plan and purpose. He became a flourishing leader in his community.

Jabez prayed that God would bless him in real and tangible ways that would expand his influence on God’s behalf. He asked God to protect and guide him, keeping him from evil and harm. God granted Jabez’ request and enabled him to become a witness for the LORD among his family and community.

The Prayer of Jabez is the title of a best-selling book by Bruce Wilkinson published in 2000. The subtitle is “Breaking Through to the Blessed Life.” Based on today’s passage, the book encourages believers to pray a specific, five-part daily prayer to experience God’s blessing, power, and provision in their lives.

“Bless me.” Asking God for tangible, unmerited favor and recognizing Him as the source of everything good. Seeking to release every selfish motive to be fully available for God’s purpose and pleasure. Understanding that blessed people bless people.

“Enlarge my territory.” Desiring to accept more responsibility and ministry opportunity. Committing to servant leadership and faithful stewardship. Praying for an expanded scope of influence and capacity to bring glory to God.

“Let your hand be with me.” Requesting God’s daily guidance, power, and presence rather than relying on personal knowledge and ability. Recognizing, as Paul did, that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.

“Keep me from harm.” Asking for protection from temptation and injury. Being strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Putting on the full armor of God, in order to take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Praying and walking in the Spirit.

“That I will be free from pain.” Not just wanting to avoid suffering, but desiring your life to be a source of joy to God and a blessing to others. Overcoming your hurts and challenges through God’s healing and grace. Making wise and godly choices that result in benefit to others, rather than causing pain and heartache.

Jabez prayed boldly, then left it entirely up to God to decide where, when, and how he would respond. Wilkinson explains, “When we seek God’s blessing as the ultimate value in life, we are throwing ourselves entirely into the river of His will and power and purposes for us. All our other needs become secondary to what we really want, which is to become wholly immersed in what God is trying to do in us, through us, and around us for His glory.”
