“…this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind
and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press onward toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
“What in the world is the Traditionals Ministry?! So glad you asked. This is a ministry that began in 2008 for all adults at our church who were over 55 years of age. As we progressed with this ministry, the age range grew to everyone over 50 years of age…about 1,500 of us. Three years ago, we officially divided this ministry into two entirely separate ministries within that age range. We now have a Baby Boomer ministry for everyone born between the years 1946-1964. Then everyone born before 1946 is in our Traditionals Ministry.
Maybe a better question is, “Why are you doing this? Why are you dividing these ministries, and what do you do?” Those are good questions too. You are probably aware that adults are living much longer than previously, and you’re probably also aware that those people’s lives are lived with a great deal more vitality. What does God have in mind for us if He has gifted us with these “extra” years? I personally feel that with the gifts that God gives us, there is an expectation. This is where we feel the church needs to enter the picture.
The Traditionals Ministry is designed for those adults in their 70s and older as they navigate a new season of life. Their needs…their decisions…their goals are now different than they were even 10 years earlier. How can they be equipped to face new stages of life? How can they live their lives in a more productive way as they face uncertainty ahead? How can their faith continue to grow during this stage of life? That’s why we have our Traditionals Ministry. We can grow in our faith, and with our relationships with others as we grow older. We can continue to learn new things and stay active physically. There are a number of things we can improve in this stage of life. Our church helps older adults to continue to make contribution into the lives of family, friends, and strangers by staying on purpose for God.
Shalom… Larry Link, Minister to Baby Boomers & Traditionals Adults
