“Every life is important to God and therefore important to us.”
With that clarion call began one of the greatest faith movements in the history of Arlington. Mission Arlington has been “taking church to the people” and meeting people’s needs in the name of Jesus right from the heart of Arlington for 32 years.
First Baptist Church Arlington formed Mission Arlington in 1986, and as Mission Arlington grew, so did its reach and its scope of influence. Mission Metroplex was created in 1990 with a two-fold purpose: to extend the ministry’s reach through partnerships with other churches and entities and to limit legal liability.
With a commitment to bringing the truth of John 3:16 to every person in Arlington, apartment Bible studies began in 1986, eventually multiplying over and over to what it is today: 354 Bible Study groups/congregations reaching more than 3,100 people. In 2017, the Mission noted 1,677 salvations and 969 rededications to Jesus.
Besides taking church to the people, Mission Metroplex is well known for how it meets physical needs, such as clothing, food, furniture, school supplies, medical and dental services, and much more.
- Emergency Assistance was provided for over 43,600 families.
- Rainbow Express (children’s Bible groups) blessed children in 404 locations and involved over 4,400 volunteers from 11 states and 48 Texas cities.
- Weekly after-school programs occurred at 41 sites for over 2,100 children.
- There were seven summer camps for over 1,100 children.
- Over 2,800 dental visits occurred, totaling over 6,400 volunteer hours and $843,500 free dentistry. Over $1,255,000 in free health care and $501,000 free prescriptions were provided.
While Mission Metroplex meets needs tirelessly for 364 days a year, there’s a time every year when its star shines brightest – Christmas. Last year, the Christmas Store reached over 7,200 families, and the Christmas story was told in six languages (English, Spanish, Arabic, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, and French). More than 7,000 volunteers helped at the store, including 50+ who work at the store all year long, processing and organizing toys. About 4,000 bicycles were given away in the 2017 Christmas season.
Nowadays, Mission Metroplex continues as a hub for meeting people’s needs but also as an outlet for literally thousands of people to volunteer for hours, days, or even weeks at a time, all year long. Whether it’s a church group from the other side of the metroplex (or the other side of the country), employees from major corporations, or families who want to serve side by side, Mission Metroplex gives everyone a way to jump in and make a difference, from the youngest to the oldest volunteer. Over 1,400 volunteer teams contributed over 166,000 volunteer hours. FBCA members are frequent and faithful volunteers at Mission Arlington.
For the 2018-2019 fiscal year,
the total given to Mission Metroplex will exceed $355,000.
As FBCA continues its 32-year commitment to Mission Metroplex, it’s important to note that our financial support of Mission Metroplex exceeds the combined support we give to FBCA Directed Engagementsand Global Engagements. We contribute more to Mission Metroplex than to all our Cooperative Engagements. In addition to support from the general budget and the World Mission Offering, individuals provided over $70,000 in designated gifts directed to Mission Metroplex in 2017.
For over 30 years, FBCA has been a committed partner with Mission Metroplex through both volunteerism and financial contributions, partnering with the tireless staff in answering that clarion call to bring the love of Jesus to our neighbors.
