Today’s Scripture: Hebrews 1
By: Larry Link
This chapter picks up some of the same theme as yesterday’s reading when we are told by the writer of Hebrews that, “He (Jesus) is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being.” When you look in a mirror, what do you expect to see? Your exact image. Jesus is all that God is, “…the exact imprint.” If you’ve gone to the fair, then maybe you have gone through an area where there are many mirrors that are intended to distort what you look like. Sometimes you look funny, and sometimes you don’t like what you see at all. Jesus would look exactly like God every…single…time.
You’ve probably wondered about angels at some time. Some people are enthralled with the study of angels. Who or what are they? This chapter gives a good description of who they are and what they do. There’s no doubt left in our mind though, after reading this chapter, that Jesus is vastly superior to an angel. This writer wants us to understand that while angels are spiritual creatures, they worship Jesus.
Then there’s spiritual experiences that we hold to so tightly. We may have a very emotional feeling attached to these experiences, and we worship those spiritual experiences. At other times, we try to make the spiritual experience our primary objective. We may even work at conjuring up those experiences. If you’re married, this would be like being in love with marriage, instead of your spouse. A good marriage results from loving and serving your spouse, and a healthy spiritual life results from glorifying Christ. Being in love with a spiritual experience is not the same as loving and serving Christ.
By now you’re getting the picture. When we look to Jesus and worship Christ alone, we’re truly walking with God.
