Today’s Scripture: John 1:1-18
By: Kurt Krodle
What a magnificent beginning as John opens this Gospel by giving us a glimpse of eternity before creation! We see the proclamation of the truth of who Jesus is – he was and is God. Then, John gives us a brief glimpse of the work of creation itself – that everything was made through Jesus. As one of my theology professors would say, “Jesus is the vehicle through which all of creation happened!” It all happened through Him.
Then, it all comes to fruition when in verse 14, John declares, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Our Hope, our Treasure, our Provider, our Defender, our Rescuer, our faithful God put on flesh and came to walk among creation “clothed” as one of us. Isn’t it remarkable that the One who has been for all of eternity, the One through whom we exist – would leave the Father’s side to join us and rescue us?
Today would you just rest in the truth of who Jesus truly is? John 1 is theologically profound and foundational to our understanding of Jesus, but it is also relationally overwhelming. The God who created all that has been created, the One who created you and me and put breath in our lungs. The One on whom we turned our backs, way back in Genesis 3, would not return the “favor” in kind. Instead, God would put on flesh, become as one of us, and begin the work of redemption in earnest to rescue His creation.
May we be in awe today at who Jesus truly is and all that He has done.
