Today’s Scripture: Luke 2:22-40
By: Brian Sepulveda
This passage begins with Mary and Joseph being obedient in bringing their son, Jesus, to the temple to be consecrated to the Lord. Their obedience was cause for amazement and confirmation of God’s Great plan of redemption, through the eyes of two people they meet.
Simeon was a devote and righteous man who was promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the long-awaited Messiah. Led by the Holy Spirit, he entered the Temple Courts, and there he saw Jesus. Immediately, he knew that he had laid eyes on the Messiah. He praised God for His faithfulness, and then he spoke a new and radical word about Jesus…that he would be “a light for revelation to the Gentiles.” Jews believed a Messiah would come and be the salvation for them, but through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, Simeon speaks of the Messiah being a revelation to the Gentiles as well! This is long before Peter would visit Cornelius and share the Gospel message with him and his household, radically changing the beliefs of the Jews in that day.
Then, they met Anna, the prophet, who spoke about Jesus being the redemption of Jerusalem. She, too, was obedient to the Lord in her worship of God day and night through prayer and fasting. This obedience led to the revelation of who this child was and the impact He would have on the world.
What areas of your life are lacking obedience? What barriers are there that keep you from hearing the Holy Spirit prompt you to speak, act, or love someone? Are you immersed in the worship of our Lord, so much so, that you see others as Jesus does? Pray for God to reveal to you all that He wants for you in these matters.
