Today’s Scripture: John 19:28-41
By: Reggie Jacob
Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “IT IS FINISHED!” He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. He completed what He set out to do, to die for the sins of the world!
These are some of the most powerful, yet somber words written in all of Scripture! God the Son was dead. The Author of Life breathed His last. And just to make absolutely certain that He was indeed dead, a soldier pierced the side of Jesus with a spear. Blood and water flowed-out confirming this crucifixion was carried to completion. He was finished.
I cannot imagine what was going through Joseph of Arimathea’s mind when he asked permission from Pilate to bury the body of Jesus. Joseph displayed an extraordinary amount of courage, asking Pilate for the crucified body of such a famed and controversial man! But Joseph wasn’t alone. Nicodemus joined him, bringing 100 pounds of spices to add as they wrapped the body of Jesus in linen. Here they were, with their own hands, burying the body of Jesus. Lastly, they put Him in a new tomb which was be His “final resting place.”
As we reflect on this passage, we remember Christ’s death on the Cross and His burial in a borrowed tomb. The Savior of the World was dead, wrapped in strips of burial cloth, and laid to rest. But the story is far from over . . . Sunday is coming!
