We need you to help us as we tackle a monumental endeavor – we are going to crochet the Christmas tree for the lobby in 2020. Let us explain..
In December, I saw a Christmas tree on Facebook that was made by a team at Musgrave Methodist Church in South Africa. They made a Christmas tree out of baby blankets they had crocheted throughout the year. After the Christmas season, they were going to donate the baby blankets to children’s hospitals. It dawned on me that our theme for 2020 was Love, and it would be a great act of love to crochet blankets, use them on our Christmas tree, then donate them to children’s hospitals. But our Welcome Center tree is 14 feet tall…we will need a lot of blankets.
This is where we need your help! Have you crocheted before? Are you willing to learn? Here’s how it will work: we will find teachers to serve as Crochet Captains who will teach us at a kickoff session. The blankets are made of granny squares, so our team of crocheters will make granny squares and our more experienced crocheters will assemble the squares into blankets. You make granny squares and turn them in – we reach our goal.
We are setting a goal for 100 blankets – and that means we need 3,600 granny squares! So whether you’ve crocheted or not, we can use you! The granny squares are pretty simple and you’ll pick up on it quickly. Men, women, children, youth, students – we can use you all!
If you’re willing to take the leap, register below. For a registration fee of $20, you will get all the supplies you need: 6 colors of yarn, a crochet hook, stitch counters and a darning needle. I just learned to crochet a week ago, and I’ve made 6 squares – so seriously anyone can learn to crochet. Register for the team here, and we will contact you with the kickoff times!
